Radio will be reborn
I've been listening to my latest craze these last few days: Last.fm. It's an online radio station that is delicious: it plays music that statistics say you will probably like and (I should stress this) nothing else. It's a playlist. Of bands that people recomended to you.
The recomendation system does tend to reinforce cliques, though. It works by noting what you listen to and rate, finding other people who like that, finding what else they like, and recomending that to you. So far, so good, but internet users of the world, I have a note for you.
Anyone who describes music that they like as "underrated" runs a very serious risk of being described by me as "so postmodern" or even getting a less-than-sincere grimace.
Just so you know.
